The question of who Jesus was historically and who he is today continues to be debated.

Our God sent his only Son, born of Mary and Joseph, to save us from ourselves. The problem is that as human beings we don’t like how he saved us—going to the cross! We have a natural instinct to avoid suffering and pain. It can seem strange that our God saved us through a cross and thus we can struggle with who Jesus is in our lives. But if we accept the reality that the cross leads us to the resurrection then we begin to understand what happened over 2000 years ago and who Jesus can be for us today.

In Luke’s gospel today, Jesus asks first, “Who do the people say that I am?” He asks this because the disciples have just come back from a mission of “proclaiming the good news and curing diseases everywhere” (Lk 9:6). Immediately before today’s gospel is the multiplication of the loaves and fish where the “people all ate and were satisfied” (v. 17). Then in the text today he asks his disciples and us, “And who do you say that I am?”

Images of Jesus abound. In different parts of the world the people’s experience of the risen Lord is of course contextualized. In Africa for example there are icons of a black Jesus. In Latin America some of the crosses depict a more graphic suffering of our Lord—Christ is very thin and boney. This is because of the suffering of the people in that part of the world.

Here in the United States we have traditionally received our images of Christ and our spirituality from Europe. That of course is changing with more and more immigrants from Latin American, Africa and Asia. I believe that this is a good trend for our country and our church both here and throughout the world. It keeps us as a truly catholic or universal church where there are no differences among those who believe as Paul points out.

The question then is for each individual to answer who is Jesus for me? As with larger communities the image on our hearts comes from our experiences. We are invited to take the time to search our hearts and know the Lord for whom our soul thirsts. Then we can say without debate that Jesus is the, “The Christ of God.”

Moreover, within the Church particular Churches hold a rightful place; these Churches retain their own traditions, without in any way opposing the primacy of the Chair of Peter, which presides over the whole assembly of charity (11*) and protects legitimate differences, while at the same time assuring that such differences do not hinder unity but rather contribute toward it. Between all the parts of the Church there remains a bond of close communion whereby they share spiritual riches, apostolic workers and temporal resources. For the members of the people of God are called to share these goods in common, and of each of the Churches the words of the Apostle hold good: "According to the gift that each has received, administer it to one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God".(123)

All men are called to be part of this catholic unity of the people of God which in promoting universal peace presages it. And there belong to or are related to it in various ways, the Catholic faithful, all who believe in Christ, and indeed the whole of mankind, for all men are called by the grace of God to salvation.

This Sacred Council wishes to turn its attention firstly to the Catholic faithful. Basing itself upon Sacred Scripture and Tradition, it teaches that the Church, now sojourning on earth as an exile, is necessary for salvation. Christ, present to us in His Body, which is the Church, is the one Mediator and the unique way of salvation. In explicit terms He Himself affirmed the necessity of faith and baptism(124) and thereby affirmed also the necessity of the Church, for through baptism as through a door men enter the Church. Whosoever, therefore, knowing that the Catholic Church was made necessary by Christ, would refuse to enter or to remain in it, could not be saved.

They are fully incorporated in the society of the Church who, possessing the Spirit of Christ accept her entire system and all the means of salvation given to her, and are united with her as part of her visible bodily structure and through her with Christ, who rules her through the Supreme Pontiff and the bishops. The bonds which bind men to the Church in a visible way are profession of faith, the sacraments, and ecclesiastical government and communion. He is not saved, however, who, though part of the body of the Church, does not persevere in charity.
